Live human CCTV monitoring vs. passive recording: what actually changes
Recorded CCTV tells you what happened. Live monitoring changes what happens. A plain comparison of cost, response and outcomes.
Most commercial camera systems in Los Angeles do one thing well: they record. When something goes wrong, the footage is there in the morning — a clean recording of a crime that already happened. The question owners rarely ask is what the system was doing at 2 a.m. while it happened. The answer is: nothing.
Live monitoring puts a person behind the cameras during the hours that matter. Analytics flag people and vehicles in protected zones; a licensed operator looks at the live feed, decides whether it is a threat, speaks to the subject through an on-site speaker and dispatches response if they do not leave. The crime is interrupted instead of documented.
The cost difference is smaller than most owners expect. A recorded-only system costs nothing to run and delivers nothing when it counts. Monitoring on existing cameras typically runs from a few hundred to a couple of thousand dollars a month per site — a fraction of a posted guard — and it is the difference between a report and a loss.
What to look for in a monitoring provider: licensed operators (ask for the ACO number), a written escalation protocol you control, a live voice rather than a recorded message, and reports with clips. If a provider cannot show you a sample incident report, keep looking.
