After-hours delivery monitoring: a receiving-door checklist for retailers

Early-morning deliveries before staff arrive are where short counts, damaged goods and unlocked doors meet. A checklist that closes the gap.

Grocery, convenience and restaurant operators take deliveries at 5 or 6 a.m., often before the first employee arrives. The rear door opens, product is dropped, the truck leaves, and nobody saw whether 14 cases or 12 cases came off the truck — or whether the door closed afterwards.

A monitored receiving door changes the routine. The operator has the delivery schedule, confirms the vehicle and driver, watches the handover, notes the visible count and condition, and confirms the door is secured. Anything unscheduled — an unmarked van, a driver who leaves product on the step — is called in while the truck is still there.

The checklist: (1) delivery schedule shared with the monitoring center; (2) camera view of the door, the vehicle and the handover area; (3) count and condition noted at handover; (4) door closure confirmed; (5) unscheduled deliveries flagged live; (6) exception report each morning. Add a speaker and operators can address drivers directly.

The result is not just fewer short deliveries. It is a record: when a vendor disputes a claim, the clip and the operator's note settle it in minutes.
